Installing Stabl-Power using our total systems approach effectively results in the elimination of over 46% of the power quality issues identified in two studies: Melhorn et al (2005) & McNulty et al (2002). In real terms, the action of ‘cleaning’ your electricity results in direct and measurable benefits, some of which include:
Speaking to this last point, it is important to illustrate some of those costs: The figure to the right shows a distribution of costs related to Power Quality issues as identified by Manson & Targosz(2008). Although this data was collected in the European Union, it is important to note that the data is the same for businesses operating in North America. Note the weighing of the costs in Work-in-Process (WIP), and Process slow down; these two alone have significant negative bottom-line impact. To put this in perspective, the European Power Quality Survey Report (Targosz & Manson, 2007) declared that Power Quality problems cause a financial loss of more than 150 Billion Euros (+ 200 Billion US Dollars) per year in the EU-25 countries. While Business Week magazine, much more conservatively, estimated the cost to US companies at $26 Billion per year. Using either estimate, Power Quality issues are a huge drain on business profits but more importantly, these are costs that can be reduced or eliminated!
This corporation’s headquarters are housed in a historical conversion of a heritage church and monastery at one of the highest elevations in the city of Cincinnati. Rising 156 feet above this unique complex is the original church steeple and therein lies the crux of the problem that plagued their business: several times each year, lightning would strike this building causing the loss of PC’s, damage to their mainframe and various parts of the electrical system. Multiple attempts with a variety of different equipment had been made to solve this problem, but to no avail… until they contacted Stabl-Power.
Our engineers moved quickly to thoroughly assess the requirements necessary to produce a total system approach to the protection of the business’ capital assets and overall facility reliability. Soon thereafter, Stabl-Power was installed. The result? In a June 2012 letter to our team, one of the company directors wrote:
“From the day we bought and installed Stabl-Power in 2007, we have not had a lightning surge hit our building and it has well paid for itself time after time...” And he continued with, “Since it has controlled our power surges and peaks, it has saved us many dollars in electric charges and our utility bill has declined from the time of installation. We are completely satisfied with it (Stabl-Power) and would recommend it for anyone…”
Retail businesses are all electrical energy intensive operations and grocery/supermarkets more than most: their freezers, coolers, the meat department saws, the heating/air conditioning equipment, the POS systems at the check-outs, and other appliances all draw on the electrical supply while creating a host of power quality issues. In an effort to control escalating utility and power quality related maintenance costs, this major supermarket chain reached out to the Stabl-Power engineers for a solution, and our team met the challenge with a Stabl-Power System designed to their needs.
After an exhaustive analysis of the 12 month “pre-” versus post- installation periods, the CFO of the chain wrote:
“Without considering other factors such as decreased maintenance costs, there was a savings of 10.25% in kilowatt hour consumption. Based on that alone, I consider the installation an unequivocal success.”
Located in the Upper Mid-western USA, this growing business was faced with multiple Power Quality issues. Internally, they had miles of conveyers, multiple electric motors and various VFD’s in their production operation, all contributing to ’dirt’ in their electrical system. After an exhaustive analysis the Stabl-Power engineers, following the Optimized Design Protocol, made their recommendation for the Stabl-Power system to address the issues, the Customer accepted the proposal and had the system installed.
As mentioned, this was a “growing” company and, during the year following the installation they moved from an 8 hour per day/5 day per week production to a 12 hour per day/5 day per week schedule. However, after weighting was done for the cost savings associated with the longer day (fewer power-ups per averaged production hour), climactic variables (heat/cooling days pre-install versus post-install), and other similar considerations, the Client’s Financial team rendered their verdict:
After considering all the facts, the expenses and variables, the derivative net increase in costs for a 50% longer production cycle was only 2%. It appears that the Stabl-Power System paid for itself in spades!
